CBT & DBT Counselling

Calmer Mind.
Stronger Skills.

Everyone struggles at times — thoughts that won’t slow down, emotions that feel overwhelming, or patterns that keep repeating despite your best efforts. Therapy can help you understand those patterns and develop practical skills to respond differently.

Our clinicians use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to help children, teens, and adults build skills for managing thoughts, regulating emotions, and navigating everyday challenges. We provide a warm, respectful environment where you can explore difficulties and develop tools that support meaningful change.

When Therapy Might Help

Recognizing the Patterns

CBT or DBT counselling may be helpful if you or someone you care about is experiencing any of the following. These are common starting points — not requirements.

💭

Persistent Worry or OverthinkingThoughts that cycle and repeat, making it hard to feel settled or make decisions with confidence.

🌊

Difficulty Managing Strong EmotionsEmotions that arrive quickly and feel overwhelming, sometimes leading to reactions you later regret.

🔃

Repeating PatternsThe same cycles in relationships, behaviour, or decision-making — despite wanting things to be different.

🚫

Avoidance of Everyday SituationsPulling away from activities, conversations, or responsibilities that once felt manageable.

🔋

Stress, Burnout, or ExhaustionFeeling emotionally drained, disconnected, or running on empty despite trying to keep up.

🔒

Feeling StuckKnowing what you want to change but not having the tools or support to make it happen.

🤝

Relationship PatternsRecognising reactive, avoidant, or people-pleasing patterns in relationships — and building the communication and emotional regulation skills to respond differently with a partner, family member, or colleague.

Therapy focuses on understanding these patterns and learning practical strategies that can support healthier responses. Progress looks different for everyone.

Understanding the Approaches

CBT vs DBT: Two Toolkits,
One Goal

Both CBT and DBT are evidence-informed, skills-focused therapies. Your clinician may use one approach, or combine elements of both, depending on your goals and the patterns you identify together.

🧠 CBT

The Thinking Toolkit

Understanding the connection between thoughts, feelings, and actions

Often Helpful For

Anxiety Negative Self-Talk Perfectionism Depression Stress & Worry Cycles

CBT focuses on the relationship between Thoughts → Feelings → Actions. Together we identify common thinking patterns and explore ways to interpret situations more realistically and constructively.

💗 DBT

The Emotion Toolkit

Building skills for emotional regulation, acceptance, and connection

Often Helpful For

Intense Emotional Reactions Relationship Conflict Impulsivity Difficulty Regulating Emotions

DBT builds on CBT principles and adds skills that support emotional regulation and acceptance. Common DBT skills include:

Distress Tolerance
Emotion Regulation
Mindfulness
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Your clinician will help you decide. Many people benefit from elements of both approaches. There is no wrong starting point — therapy is adapted to your needs as we learn what works for you.
Support at Every Stage

Therapy Adapted to Your Life Stage

Therapy approaches are adapted to match developmental needs and life stages. Here’s what therapy typically looks like for each group.

Children (6–12): Meeting Them Where They Are

Sessions may include visual tools, play-based activities, and simple language to help children understand emotions and behaviour. Parents and caregivers are important partners — strategies discussed in therapy can often be practiced at home.

Separation anxiety and school refusal

Emotional outbursts and difficulty managing frustration

Difficulty with transitions, routine changes, or new situations

Worry patterns that affect sleep, school, or social confidence

Caregiver coaching to support skills practice at home

🧒
Children (6–12)
“Children communicate through behaviour. Therapy helps translate what they’re experiencing into language they — and their caregivers — can work with together.”
Teens (13–17): Collaborative, Respectful, and Real

A collaborative environment that respects independence while supporting emotional growth. We balance safety with the teen’s need for a confidential space to speak openly.

Academic pressure and performance anxiety

Social challenges and peer relationship difficulties

Emotional regulation and managing intense feelings

Impulsivity and conflict at home or school

Building confidence and identity in a safe, non-judgmental space

🎧
Teens (13–17)
“Teenagers deserve a space where they feel genuinely heard — not lectured. Therapy works best when it meets them where they are, with honesty and without judgment.”
Adults (18+): Understanding Patterns, Building New Ones

Therapy focuses on understanding patterns in thinking, emotions, and behaviour and developing strategies that support meaningful change across work, relationships, and daily life.

Work stress, burnout, and difficulty setting boundaries

Relationship challenges and communication patterns

Parenting stress and family dynamics

Persistent anxiety, mood concerns, or emotional exhaustion

Breaking cycles that feel entrenched or automatic

🧑
Adults (18+)
“Most adults who come to therapy already know their patterns. What they need are practical tools — and a space where they can practice using them without judgment.”
